ACHS Football Folklore 1956-2008

1971 Camarillo players Dale Walker and Mack Braden and Steve Hart watching the action against Royal.
1990 the 8-4 Scorps were huge underdogs in the 1st round playoffs traveling to Glendale to face the Nitros who were 10-0 and ranked #1 in Camarillo’s division. Undaunted quarterback Corey Tucker and RB Fahali Campbell propelled a huge ACHS rushing attack that Glendale couldn’t stop. Their fans were stunned by the Blue and Silver 33-8. The Scorps had to travel the next week to a tough Capo Valley team and lost.
1973 Scorps were picked to win the Marmonte League and beat Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park for the crown. Louis Perez and Monte Williams brilliant running attack couldn’t help the hapless Scorps beat a weak Oxnard team in the final game of the year that ended Camarillo’s hopes of the playoffs. T.O. won the title. Camarillo ended 4-5 and 4-3 in league.
2008 marks the first time in 42 seasons Camarillo won’t play Thousand Oaks.
Before Camarillo was built in 1956 the first “Ventura League” established in the 1930’s was made up of Lompoc, Oxnard, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Hart, and Antelope Valley. The road trips were brutal. One night in Antelope Valley where they faced Oxnard in the 1940’s in a key league game it was 20 degrees in a stiff wind at game time. Santa Paula was always a favorite to win the championship. Times have changed! Oxnard had two huge rivals in Santa Barbara and Ventura. That continues today.
Channel Islands who struggles each year in football now was once a huge force in the Marmonte League. They played Camarillo for the league title in 1983 and lost to the Scorps 10-6. Blaine Wingle who played Offensive Guard for ACHS was a star player and coached by his dad Leo Wingle who happened to be head coach for CI. The Camarillo players bet Leo to shave his head if his Raider team was upset by Camarillo. He shaved his head slick on the Saturday after Camarillo’s big upset. In 1987 CI lost to Thousand Oaks in the CIF championship game for the Coastal Conference. The Raiders hope to regain its legacy with a new coach this year. CI has never won a Pacific View League Title.
In 1956- until about 1968 Camarillo students had a tradition of bashing an old car anyway they could in the quad area as a “bon fire” event before big games against Oxnard and Santa Barbara. It is unknown who donated an old car each year. In 1965 it looks like from pictures it was a 1949 Mercury. The tradition was halted when several students were cut by flying glass and metal.
Old timers say that Ventura Blvd. was essentially closed down each Saturday afternoon at 2pm during the late 50’s and 60’st as many townspeople in Camarillo donned James Ackerman Stadium to support the town’s beloved football team. With the exception of about 700 Rio Mesa students who live West of Arneill our town continues to support ACHS football each Friday night with several thousand fans at every home game.
From about 1964 to approximately 1994, Camarillo’s drill team wore Spanish oriented costumes celebrating Don Adolfo’s Spanish heritage and his donation of land for ACHS. Drill teams in the 1970’s and 80’s led by Miss Linda Ayerza won many titles and awards.
2008 is the 36th season under the lights. ACHS played 15 years on Saturday afternoons for all home games.
