Jeff Mathews of Camarillo High is the player of the year for the Pacific View League football team. The lineman of the year is Tyler O’Rear. The receiver of the year is Ryan Molesworth. Scorpion Coach Dennis Riedmiller is the coach of the year. Named to the all-league first team offense were Nathan Anderson, Andy Dean, and Chase Tackett. Tonight’s game between Camarillo and Moorpark in the CIF-SS Northern Division quarterfinals may seem a bit familiar to some. Or in the famous words of Yogi Berra, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” It will be the fifth time in the last ten years that the two teams have faced off in the playoffs. After Oxnard Rio Mesa lost 3 yards on 3 plays and missed a field goal in overtime, Jeff Mathews connected with Ozzie Toc on a 25 yard screen pass on their first play in overtime for a touchdown and a 20-14 victory. There was a crowd of over 8,000 people at Camarillo High School who watched the Spartans rush to a 14-0 lead with 7 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter before the Scorpion passing game woke up. ESPN Names Jeff Mathews Regional Player of the Week
Camarillo High School Quarterback Jeff Mathews was recently named West Region Player of the Week by ESPN. Mathews was selected after his exceptional performance last week during the Scorpion’s 69-20 win over Hueneme. During that game, Jeff shattered the previous CIF Southern Section passing record set in 1996 (see “Scorpions Clinch League Championship with 69-20 Win” for all the details). Camarillo Starts with Arroyo Grande in the Playoffs
The seedings for the CIF playoffs were released on Sunday and Camarillo will play the Arroyo Grande Eagles (7-3) in the first round at Camarillo High School. Game time is 7 pm on Friday the 20th.
